Reflections: Masada

· 2:42

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer...” (Psalm 18:2)

Masada rises out of the Judean desert near the western shore of the Dead Sea, a stark and majestic plateau of rock. It looks like a mountain island in a barren land, and a narrow path winds up from its base to the summit far above.

In this episode of Reflections, we visit Masada and look at what it teaches us about the power of God. The name comes from a Hebrew word often translated “stronghold” or “fortress.” The word appears several times in 1 and 2 Samuel, where David took refuge in a time of crisis, and again in the Psalms, where God Himself is called our fortress. Standing on Masada gives you a vivid picture of what a stronghold really is, and of what it means to trust God as ours.

Masada is also a key part of Jewish history. Late in the first century, Jewish rebels made their last stand against Rome here. Today the site is a national park in Israel and one of the country’s greatest symbols of courage and defiance against tyranny.

For us, Masada stands for more than a people’s fight for freedom. It holds lessons about faith and hope, and about the struggle we all share to walk by faith.

📖 Read the passages:

David in the stronghold: 1 Samuel 22:4–5; 1 Samuel 24:22
The Lord my fortress: 2 Samuel 22:2–3; Psalm 18:2
A rock of refuge: Psalm 31:2–3; Psalm 91:2
